Pan American Lofts, Built 1895, Modernized: Urban Pacific Builders, Donald Barany Architects -- 2007. Located on the corner of 3rd and Broadway across from the Million Dollar Theatre and the infamous Bradbury Building, it is hailed as the 2nd oldest building in Downtown Los Angeles. Situated in the Historic Core adjacent to the Civic Center and Bunker Hill. Designed by Sumner Hunt, it is notable for it's Spanish Colonial/Beaux Arts architecture that is evident in it's intricate terra cotta detailing, arched entry way and windows.
The Pan American was originally called the Irvine Byrne Block Building and was home to the Mexican Consulate during World War II. The halls and Hitchcock staircase have been immortalized in many of Alfred Hitchcock's movies, Brad Pitt's "Se7en","Fight Club","Blade Runner", and numerous tv shows and commercials alike. Undeniably, it's rich history has earned it's mark in the National Register of Historic Places.
In 2004 Long Beach based developer Urban Pacific Builders began and completed a $20,000,000 transformation of the Irvine Byrne building. A new roof was added, the garage ceiling was raised, and an entirely new elevator corridor was built. The rows of offices were converted into chic, spacious loft units, each with 12-17 foot ceilings, and floor to ceiling windows offering timeless views of the downtown landscape. Loft residences offer original exposed brick and concrete walls, plentiful natural light, high end stainless steel appliances that compliment and bring out much of the building's unique features. Together with it's ideal location in the Financial District of The Historic Core, walking distance to everything downtown has to offer, including the upcoming renovations of Grand Avenue, Urban Pacific has to offer, including the upcoming renovations of Grand Avenue, Urban Pacific has created a establishment that is unreproducible.
The project's development team granted a Historic Facade Preservation Easement to the Los Angeles Conservancy to ensure that this unique architectural gem will be preserved. In return for helping to preserve a piece of history, homeowners may be able to claim a charitable deduction from their income taxes.
